About Us

The Garden City Tennis Series™ is a collaborative initiative between the City of Newton (MA) Parks and Recreation Department and The Friends of Newton Tennis, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and USTA Community Tennis Association. The series supports tennis players while raising funds for court improvements, accessibility enhancements, and youth and community tennis programs.

Founded with a passion to elevate and expand the sport of tennis in the greater Boston region, the Garden City Tennis Series™ leverages the City of Newton’s extensive network of over 200 public and private courts to build a vibrant and inclusive tennis community. By offering organized tournament play, the series creates meaningful opportunities for players to connect, compete, and grow.

Tennis is a lifelong sport that brings together families, friends, and communities. With that spirit at its core, the Garden City Tennis Series™ is committed to providing engaging and competitive tournament experiences for players of all ages and skill levels. From novice beginners to high-performance juniors and adults, as well as doubles enthusiasts, there is truly an opportunity for everyone to participate.

Our Mission

Our mission with each Garden City event—Singles and Doubles Championships—is to bring together a community of passionate, like-minded individuals who share a deep love for the sport.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift toward robotic training, with an emphasis on technical precision and repetitive drill patterns. While these elements have value, they often fail to capture the true beauty of tennis—the competition, the fight, and the grueling battle between two fierce competitors.

The Garden City Tennis Series aims to restore and celebrate that essence. We hope to offer a fresh, nuanced perspective that rekindles a love for competition, while teaching the current and next generation what it truly means to be a competitor in sport.

All events are held in memory of Isadore Singer, avid tennis player and MIT math professor, with support from New England Tennis & Education Foundation
